      Pi 3 Model B
      Power Supply used: 2.5A
      RetroPie v4.5.1
      Built From: Official image
USB Devices connected: keyboard, 2 usb controllers (joystick+buttons+encoder)
Controller used: USB encoder is "2008 Toodles Cthulhu Multi"

I changed the display resolution and memory split settings in raspi-config and now I get a black screen instead of emulationstation. I can't SSH and I tried holding or repeatedly pressing shift at the initial boot up screen...

@benjaminjay Revert your config.txt configurations and see if it works. The file should be editable from any PC (mac/windows/linux).
If it works, then there's something with your configs - try adding them one by one to see which one is causing this.

Though not entirely the same configuration (it was a Pi 4), I encountered an issue wherein after the boot sequence the display would be completely blank. I eventually narrowed it down to the memory split setting - I had changed it, trying to follow the instructions for RetroPie 'manual installation.' Keeping it default resolved the problem.
