@tobas You should have an error message if using Jessie when you enter RetroPie-Setup saying it's no longer supported btw. Does that not show up btw?

Why so eager for newer RetroArch btw? What's the current version missing? It's not the case of a straightforward update which is why it's taking some time. @mitu has had to rework the shader configs to work with the way we configure them. Plus bugs that have needed to been fixed.

@BuZz actually no. I've had no problems upgrading anything. I really just want to have the new achievement support. I don't plan on upgrading anymore after I have achievement support on all supported systems, and the fixes to the pc engine cd achievements that were broken.

@tobas please can you go into RetroPie-Setup and tell me what it says at the top of the menu. And see if you get a dialog window first. It should inform you your version is unsupported.

Unless you are running a 3rd party image? Where did you get the RetroPie image?

@Darksavior I'm upgrading to stretch now. if all goes well I'll likely upgrade to buster. I spent a lot of time building and tweaking the image I have. honestly I love it. I would be crushed if I couldn't use it anymore. I would be very depressed. I know its silly but I get emotional over stuff like this.

@BuZz I originally had a plain image I got from here with basic emulation station but I wanted attract mode. I had no idea how to make that work so a friend of mine was nice enough to stick a neat attract mode on it. I'll look at it once stretch is done installing.

@tobas but you backed your image up before attempting this right?

I just need to tell it where to find my attract mode files but I don’t know how. I wish I was smarter with this stuff.

@BuZz I just followed the instructions to update from Jessie to stretch that I saw on a YouTube video. It was pretty straightforward....I just remembered something. During the install it asked me a few times if I wanted to keep certain settings as they were or let the install change them. Perhaps I should have said no to Those?

I followed the instructions in this video.

@tobas you would be better of backing up configs and ROMs and using a fresh image. Especially if you're not too familiar - we don't recommend doing an upgrade over a fresh install (and then restoring configs/ROMs). I suspect though one problem may be you didn't update after in RetroPie-Setup. The old binaries won't work after an update.

The settings you overwrote are probably not too important. Things like the samba config - you can restore that from RetroPie-Setup in the configuration section. And you may need to reconfigure autostart / autologin too.

@BuZz so it may be solvable if I update retropie setup?

If I go with a fresh image I may as well toss my pi in the garbage. I won’t use it again. I have no idea how to remake that attract mode and my friend that helped me with it sadly isn’t around anymore to help me again.

No, that won't be enough - you'll have to also upgrade the binaries.
But, as @BuZz suggested, better start with a clean image - upgrading in-place is not something that's been tested and it's not the recommended way.

@mitu okay. So upgrade retropie setup and upgrade the binaries. Is that difficult?

I have no idea where to even begin rebuilding what has already been built and I have no one to help me with it. A fresh image will do nothing for me, I would have no idea where to begin remaking anything near the attract mode that I had.

It will do everything for you. For one you won't be troubleshooting whatever janky rubbish has been handed to you, you'll know exactly how it works and how to recreate it when it breaks.

If you can't be bothered to do the work and go through the documentation I'm afraid retropie isn't for you.
