Adding redream standalone module
-
Hey all,
I'd e-mailed Jools a while back when I first got redream for the PI 4 out the door, they requested I post here to talk about getting a redream module setup but I failed to follow up on that.
The initial PI 4 release was intended to run on Raspbian with an X server, which caused problems for the RetroPie users that stopped by our Discord as I believe from the conversations I had RetroPie didn't install a DE / X. This week I got redream running without X on Raspbian Lite, so I figured it was time to finally follow up on my initial e-mail.
What can I do to get a module added to RetroPie for redream? I have no problem doing the work if needed, but I'm not entirely sure what all needs to be done.
Cheers,
Anthony -

Thanks for working on this! How is the performance on the pi 4?
-
@inolen it looks like someone else just did that today
-
@inolen I will put a module together - are you able to provide a static URL for the latest version we can point the module to, or alternatively we can update the module as needed to whatever is the latest. Anything I need to know regarding launch parameters ?
Thanks for your work on this. Do you have a link for the "License" also I can include in the module.

Hey BuZz,
We don't currently have a "stable" release for the Pi, but should sometime this week.
You can grab the latest dev release with https://gist.github.com/inolen/75a836f48a2e54d8d4bd5bf3d9e79856. Can modify that to grab the latest stable once it's up as well.
Nothing special regarding launch parameters (first arg is the game to launch), but it is worth noting that the binary is "portable", so the local user will need read / write permissions in the directory it's located as it will place all its files in there. There's no additional license for the raw binary.
Edit: With this, the lr-redream module can likely be removed at this point; that core is around ~2 years old now.

@inolen this is an awesome development! Just to confirm this will only install on the pi 4 not earlier models correct?
-
This is great! Will there be a way to turn off the frames per second count in the top left corner?
-
@BuZz just a heads up, pushed a new build this morning that now runs on the latest retropie rpi4 image without any fuss.
The only downside is that we still don't have support for querying / setting the display mode without X yet, but should have that work wrapped up tonight.

@BJRetro Right.
-
@HurricaneFan it's off by default, can toggle in Video options.
-
@quicksilver perf on the PI4 is great, we put out a video of it a while back:
ETA PRIME also put out a video of it:

Hi all,
I'm testing my new raspi4 2GB with nstalled retropie beta (ver.4.5.4). I cannot found redream in experimental package. Is there a way to add redream to retropie to test it?
Thanks a lot for support. -

You're using an 'old' version and there's no 'beta' image for RetroPie.
I cannot found redream in experimental package
It's not yet there.

Thanks. I installed a 4.5.13 version found in weekly builds. Is there a way to add lr-redream or readream?

@inolen Can you also check the problem with split screen multiplayer games? For example in Propeller Arena, Looney Tunes Space Race, Re Volt, Ooga booga, ..etc the screen just goes black when you try to play them.

You have a you tube video from Chuck_B 18 (few posts before) how to install Redream. Fly-cast can be found at experimental packages.

Thanks, I'll take a look to the video. I found Fly-cast but it cannot compile. It gives an error and not install correctly.

Update the script and try to rebuild again...now it shoud work.
About redream... stable release version v1.5.0 of redream is out :)
-
@WODAK yah, I just pushed a fix for most of the games (it's literally building right now).
-
@inolen I see that retropie just added a binary install for redream. Is this the current version? Great work btw, I'm having a blast testing redream out.
