Wow...OK...so this just happened. I've been trouble shooting a lot of Pi stuff recently, but this is a new one. I recently switched SD cards, and now all my menus will break once I hit the back button. The SD card is a really good one, made by Sandisk, so it's not cheap or anything. And, all my menu images are PNG files that are under 1 MB each (more are around 600 KB). Any thoughts? Could this be a resolution/buffering/settings thing? Here is a screenshot:

Post the EmulationStation log es_log.txt. Make sure you haven't accidentally started EmulationStation as a different user (root maybe ?).

Sure, here ya go (but nothing much to see I'm afraid . Perhaps it's that I'm forcing all the resolutions up to 1080p, and it can't handle it?

And I'm not sure how I would have started as a different user, not even sure what that process would have been (or how to double check)

Depends on the theme, running at a 1080p resolution would not automatically make EmulationStation unusable. Please add more info about your system, as detailed in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first, including the theme you're using.

Well, a weird thing happened. I used the retropie setup menu to until the package that includes it on the main screen. When I did that, the problem kinda went away. Weird. Perhaps some kind of corrupt there? Because when I put it back, it seems to be OK. I'll monitor it, but maybe just a fluke thing relating to the install. Oh well I guess lol.

                  Update...again...

OK, so the problem is back and I think I might have a bit more info. So it seems that when I upscaled all the images in the current theme I'm using from 720p to 1080p, the Pi can't handle it. I have tried every combination of setting, turning things way down, all the way up, compressing my images to just a few kB. Nothing helps. But when I render out the backgrounds at 1280x720 (instead of full 1080p), and then let the Pi stretch them up to full HD, it works fine. No issues what so ever.

The problem is, I need full HD. The images don't look great at all being stretched/upscaled like this. Is this a shortcoming of the hardware? Do I need to go to a Pi version 4? Would it work better on a better/faster SD card?

@AlphaBetaPie Post the theme so we can test and see if memory is an issue or maybe there's something else.
