Retropie crashing on RP4

I'm very new to Raspberry Pi, so I might be doing something wrong. I installed Retropie onto my RP4 and everything seems to load up fine, but after several minutes of playing any games on any of the emulators, the screen just goes black and the system stops responding. Any ideas?

@nsparks you are welcome to get help on the dev build from other users, just be aware it's still a work in progress.

I have an rpi4 with retropie running, and was able to play for several hours with no issues.
I started with a base raspian image, and followed these instructions here to install retropie:
