      Terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std:: logic_error'
      What(): basic_string: : _M_construct null not valid

      I installed retropie over the complete install of Raspbian and I am getting this error message when I input command emulationstation. However retropie will boot if I set it to start on boot. It is annoying having to change the settings and rebooting every time I want to go between raspbian and retropie. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

        Please add more info about your system - as detailed in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first.
        If EmulationStation starts fine when auto-started, there's no reason it wouldn't work when started manually (from the same user account - pi).

          I am using a raspberry pi 3 model B with the newest version of Raspbian Buster w Desktop. I am assuming I am getting the newest version of retropi when I git clone?

            If you install manually via git, yes - you have the latest version. However, using EmulationStation from the desktop is not a tested configuration - RetroPie is usually instaled on a Raspbian Lite image.

              That makes sense. It worked fine on the lite version of raspbian. Is there a work around? Or am I stuck switching the boot mode?

                @brnsct24 Why don't you do it the other way around - you can install the desktop from RetroPIe and start it from EmulationStation - https://retropie.org.uk/docs/FAQ/#where-did-the-desktop-go.
