      Hi all,
I've just bought a set of joysticks and buttons that are all wired up. I was told they just need to plug into the gpio pins and all should work. I've plugged them in, booted up emulation station and it's telling me no game pads connected and I can't configure. How can I fix this and do I need to configure it via a different way.
      I'm using a raspberry 2b model

If they plug via the GPIO pins, I doubt they're plug-and-play, most likely they need a driver installed. Please add more info about your system, as detailed in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first. Add a link to the joystick/gamepad you're connecting, it would help identify what configuration is needed on the Pi side.

It seems you do need to install something - see the manual:

Once connected and booted up, you can navigate to the terminal to install the required
            gpio drivers.
In RetroPie, you can do this by pressing the Ctrl-Alt and F4 key; this changes view to a
virtual terminal window, which you can run ‘emulationstation’ to go back to
            RetroPie.
            ...

It looks like you need to install GPIONext, a GPIO user driver to make the gamepad(s) work.
