Give the error message "not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(178,2)".
I've already tried everything on this forum to no avail. https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/10935/retropie-kernel-panic-not-syncing-vfs-unable-to-mount-root-fs-on-unknown-block-179-2

Looks like a bad sdcard or badly written SD card image. The message is a generic I can't find the partition named /root to start the system, which can happen for various reasons, but on a freshly written sdcard image is most likely an incorrectly written image.

Which image did you use to image your card and how did you write it ?

@mitu I ended up figuring it out (by accident), I had 2 partitions on the SD card. Even though there was only one named root it was confusing the system. I was using the image for pi 0/1 and had imaged the card with Win32DiskImager.
