Saving Game On Pokemon Crystal (GBC)

Hello Everyone,
I hope everyone is having a good day and all is going will for you!
So right out the box, I played Pokemon Crystal on GBC emulator for about 2 hours and I thoughy by saving the game inside of the emulator would save the game but I was wrong. Instead when I played the game again, the game started brand new all over again. Is there anyway to save game on the emulator while playing Pokemon Crystal?I have the Raspberry Pi 4 and using RetroPie
The controller I am using is a plug in Xbox Controller

If you press Start, you should have the option to Continue a previous save.

Yes, use the game's menu (Start button) to save your progress.
