Raspberry Pi 4 RetroPie setup 4.5.1
-
Hi everyone, I'm new the the Raspberry Pi world and am having a little trouble understanding some of the emulators and RetroPie installs. When I go to the downloads section of the site, I see the Pre-image 4.5.1 has been released, but its not showing any download options for that. Only see Raspberry Pi 0/1 and 2/3. So I'm not sure which one to select. I want to set the Pi up with NES, SNES and Sega roms to play. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I have all the roms already, but unsure of the best way/most friendliest way to set this up, especially with kids that are going to be playing on it and if I'm not home to start it up for them, I would like them to be able to use it without me helping. Sorry for the noob questions, just want to make sure I do this right from the start. Also, if there is a certain guide that would be the best to go through the installation/setup for this, that would be great! I have seen several guides out there, but they are referring to older Pi's. Hence the confusion with the Pi 4. Thanks!

Neither, since the PI4 is not supported by an official image right now.
If you want to test how Pi4 support is progressing, you can use the Manual installation method - explained in the Docs. -
So I guess my next question is, did I waste money buying the 4?
-
@kennex no, not at all. The pi 4 development build of RetroPie is work in progress but it's overall very stable and I have been using it for months now. It's not officially supported yet because it's not 100% finished but don't let that stop you. I would imagine it will be officially supported "soon"® but I can't say that with any real authority. The pi 4 is a huge step forward compared to the pi 3, especially if you want to emulate 3d game systems like N64 and Dreamcast.

The RPi 4 works fine with the manual install, it just currently lacks some features. The only 2 I have really run into so far is not being able to boot from USB and not being able to install splash screens for startup.
It might not run everything optimally yet either, but I don't think I've updated mine since January.

The splashscreen can be placed in
/opt/retropie/supplementary/splashscreen and it will work. -
Thanks for the replies! So I ended up loading Raspbian and Etcher and got it to work. Its actually pretty nice! Loaded my NES, SNES, N64 and Sega games on it and did the scraper to get the box art. Bought 2 of the wireless SNES controllers and got those working. Have it set to auto boot into RetroPie. Super excited to start playing the old games. I have used the emulators on the pc for a while, but only played a few games. Definitely going to start playing more now, since I can sit somewhere else other than my office chair to play lol. If anyone needs the link for the video to set up Raspbian and Etcher on a Pi 4, here it is:
Thanks again!!

@kennex That video is using an unsupported method to install RetroPie and is plain wrong - please don't use it as a starting point. If you look in the comments you'll see how many people cannot get it to work using those (very dated) instructions.
We occasionally get support requests from users that started with that video and cannot make it work. -
@mitu
I also installed Retropie 4.5.1 using same method as @kennex as there is no official image for RPI 4 releases yet.
Today I tried to configure wiimote for arcade shooting games using my wiimote as gun.
Thing is, in-game, crosshair is not moving, can only make it move with D-pad, and buttons A & B doesn't work aswell
I'am using official nintendo wiimote motion plus and dolphin bar (May Flash), wiimote is connected through dolphin bar not in bluetooth.
On raspbian desktop, everything is right, I can use my wiimote as mouse and buttons A & B works as right/left mouse click.
Command cat /dev/input/mouse0 shows me wiimote is sending signals, so it seems to be working, only by moving wrist not pushing any wiimote buttons..But still didn't figured what was the issue in-game.
Could it be related to the use of RPI 4 and non-official install method ?
Thanks a lot.
