When booting up the splash screen and music comes on and then I get the below error:

Pi Model or other hardware: 3B+
      Power Supply used: 5V 2.4A
RetroPie Version Used (eg 3.6, 3.8.1, 4.1 - do not write latest):
Built From: Pre made SD Image on RetroPie website
USB Devices connected: Mouse and Keyboard
      Controller used: N/A
      Error messages received:

terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::logic_error'
      what(): Basic_string::_M_construct null not valid
      Aborted
cat: /etc/motd: No such file or directory

And it proceeds to list bootup time and the information about the RetroPie system.

Log found in /dev/shm/runcommand.log (if relevant): N/A
      Guide used: N/A
      File: N/A
      Emulator: N/A

Startx command brings it to a completely black screen with a cursor in it that does nothing.

I am fairly new to all this so I apologize my ignorance

@themacford Which RetroPie version did you install ?

I don't think startx is necessary and it's not even installed on a standard RetroPie image. Why are you trying to use it ?

How large is your SD card ?

            Ver: 4.5.1

I used startx only because I am grasping at straws

@themacford Install the 4.6 image released this week and see if you get the same issues.
