Do I need to update my Pi4 to Overclock
-
I brought the Pi 4 specifically for retropie when it first released but I've been sitting on it since then till a official image came out, now that it's officially out I want to use a ready built image but it obviously needs abit of Overclock to keep things running smoothly for the likes of N64 and Dreamcast.
Now I know there was a official update for the board itself but I didnt do it because I don't use Rasbian but can I do the update through retropie once it is loaded to help with the heat issues and would it be then safe to attempt an overclock.
Thanks for reading sorry it wasn't shorter and too the point but I've never had to update the board before and I've not needed to Overclock either so pretty new even though I've owned several gen pi boards

The RetroPie 4.6 image should be pretty up to date, but you can always run an OS update from RetroPie. Do note that RetroPie is based on Raspbian Lite, so you can update as usual on a Raspbian image (using
apt
).You should try things first on the stock settings before going the overclocking route, which has different parameters and limitations than the previous models.

@mitu thanks yeah I did a small Overclock just boosting it a small amount and it killed my Argon case motherboards BUT I do think it was dead out the box honestly because it has a fan built into the case and I never heard it ramp up on start up which it should have done, I've ordered a new case and will update everything first before even attempting another Overclock I think
