raspberry pi not booting into emulationstation
-
so, i am trying to use the raspberry pi 4 on emulation station and its the first time boot up. But when i booted it up it everything was fine until it got out of the boot text it just went black but i can still use the terminal and everything else including stuff like the raspi config.
Steps i used
-used a image for emulation-station from the official site(https://retropie.org.uk/download/)
-reformatted my SD card to fat 32
-wrote the image to my sd card (used etcher to write it)
-booted it up
-used config text for safe mode and no display(this made me able to atleast go to the terminal)
-power supply is efficient and i know all the wires and cables are in working order and meant for the raspberry pi
i have tried to start from fresh and do everything again like 3 times now i don't know what to do.and that's about it please help i was really exited to see the performance on the raspberry pi 4.
Ty for the help! (; -
Type emulationstation into the terminal. Then, when you're in, go to Configuration>RetroPie-Setup>Configuration Options>autostart>Boot to Emulationstation. Select it and then reboot the Pi.

You should add the rest of the information asked in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first.
What display are you using (TV/Monitor) ? Did you connect the HDMI cable into the 1st port (next to the USB-C power port) ? -
@mitu im using a monitor and yes i connected everything i can still use the terminal so i know i am getting a HDMI signal and the red light isn't blinking so i am pretty sure the power is good
-
@Devenhulk Can you run, from the terminal,
tvservice -s
and post the output ? What monitor are you using (model/vendor) ? -
@mitu im using a scripture monitor and a 128 gb SD
-
@mitu yes i can it says state 0x6 {dvi custom rgb full 4;3} 640x480 60.00hz, progressive
-
im using a scripture monitor
Never heard of this and can't find any reference to it - can you be more specific ? Model number ?
-
mb i meant to say Sceptre monitor E225W-1920

Post your
config.txt
- as it it now. -

Some settings may impact device functionality. See link above for details
uncomment if you get no picture on HDMI for a default "safe" mode
hdmi_safe=1uncomment this if your display has a black border of unused pixels visible
and your display can output without overscan
#disable_overscan=1
uncomment the following to adjust overscan. Use positive numbers if console
goes off screen, and negative if there is too much border
#overscan_left=16
#overscan_right=16
#overscan_top=16
#overscan_bottom=16uncomment to force a console size. By default it will be display's size minus
overscan.
#framebuffer_width=1280
#framebuffer_height=720uncomment if hdmi display is not detected and composite is being output
#hdmi_force_hotplug=1
uncomment to force a specific HDMI mode (this will force VGA)
#hdmi_group=1
#hdmi_mode=1uncomment to force a HDMI mode rather than DVI. This can make audio work in
DMT (computer monitor) modes
#hdmi_drive=2
uncomment to increase signal to HDMI, if you have interference, blanking, or
no display
#config_hdmi_boost=4uncomment for composite PAL
#sdtv_mode=2
#uncomment to overclock the arm. 700 MHz is the default.
#arm_freq=800Uncomment some or all of these to enable the optional hardware interfaces
#dtparam=i2c_arm=on
#dtparam=i2s=on
#dtparam=spi=onUncomment this to enable infrared communication.
#dtoverlay=gpio-ir,gpio_pin=17
#dtoverlay=gpio-ir-tx,gpio_pin=18Additional overlays and parameters are documented /boot/overlays/README
Enable audio (loads snd_bcm2835)
dtparam=audio=on
[pi4]
Enable DRM VC4 V3D driver on top of the dispmanx display stack
dtoverlay=vc4-fkms-v3d
max_framebuffers=2[all]
#dtoverlay=vc4-fkms-v3d
overscan_scale=1 -
Replace
hdmi_safe
withhdmi_group=1 hdmi_mode=16 hdmi_drive=2
and see if you get a proper picture.
-
okay ill try thanks
-
@mitu i tried all 3 but when i try to boot up it doesn't Evan show that it finds a signal anymore so i switched it back to HDMI_safe
-
@Devenhulk Try choosing another video mode - see https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/configuration/config-txt/video.md. It's strange that for a monitor that claims to support 1080, setting the video mode to 1080p doesn't work.
EDIT: you can add
hdmi_force_hotplug=1 hdmi_ignore_edid=0xa5000080
to the previous lines, this will make the Pi ignore what your monitor sends in the EDID.
-
@mitu k ill go try that
-
@mitu i am sorry for the late reply been a little busy but when i type in those lines it still doesn't change that it boots up and there's a black screen i can still access terminal though but when i type in emulation station it just goes back to the black screen
