    No sound in retropie

      I just did a fresh install yesterday (with the official retropie image).
      I have an RPI 4
      Previous to the official release, I had done the work around for the fkms branch on github, and sound worked well.
      I am using canakit hardware (including power supply)
      retropie 4.6
      USB devices: mouse, keyboard, ps4 controller
      I think I may have messed up the sound settings (I don't recall having sound with the fresh install, but may have).
      Here's the error messages I'm getting when i go to the audio settings in retropie menu

      lvl0: VolumeControl::init() - Failed to find mixer elements!
      lvl0: VolumeControl::init() - Failed to find mixer elements!
      ALSA 1ib control.c:1375:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL both
      lvl0: VolumeControl::init() - Failed to attach to default card!
      ALSA 1ib control.c:1375:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL both
      lvl0: VolumeControl::init() - Failed to attach to default card!

      I've played around a bit with the audio settings in the start menu. The volume resets to 0 if I don't have pcm selected.

      I'm relatively a novice with the rpi, so I'd be happy to provide any more information if necessary.

        You forgot one important detail - how are you getting your sound out ? Is via the HDMI connection or the Headphones jack ?
        Make sure you select your desired output in the 'Audio' menu from the RetroPie system and in EmulationStation select Default as the Audio Card and PCM as the Audio Device. If you're using HDMI, make sure you use the port closest to the USB-C power port.

          Thanks for your response.

          I tried that. didn't help.

          I've figured out that something changed when I went to install the PIXEL DE. Seeing as the install was so new, I went ahead and flashed the microsd card once again. Sound is working great now.

          Silly me, forgot to include that detail :(

          Are there any known issues with adding a DE on top of the retropie install? I'd like to have the option of a desktop as I plan to run dosbox outside of retropie since I've used it before in other linux installs.

            @DaMatt Dosbox is included in RetroPie and you can run it without needing to install a desktop environment. But the Pixel installation should not influence how the sound is configured, unless you changed the settings when running the desktop.

              Thank you! I'll look more into dosbox in retropie. Not sure what I did to the sound, but wasn't much work to re-flash the sd card.
