Do any emulators benefit from an analog joystick rather than a digital one?

@Bluebotlabs While almost all PS1 games will work without analog sticks, many will benefit from them. Apple games that require a joystick will need analog, but most can be played with keyboard. N64 games require analog fir the main directional stick.

System Config: Retropie 4.4 with full desktop, RPi 3B, 256gb SD, 5v 2.1A 5,200 mAH USB battery. EasyMSX controller mounted with Pimoroni Hyperpixel 4 (non touch). Also running 4.6 on a 4gb Pi 4 serving as my primary desktop computer now.

some MAME games support analog controls (typically driving games, lightgun games, etc)

I mapped analog + digital inputs for all my emulators by activating the left analogue stick in addition to the d-pad in all lr-emulators and set both methods in the "input (general)"-menu of AdvanceMame.
So i can use both ways with every game or even change from d-pad to thumbstick during gameplay.

Are you sure about that? Because in the documentation it appears to be mapped to digital inputs

@Bluebotlabs it's definitely analog. You can test this by loading mario64 and then push the left analog stick slightly forward you will see Mario start walking if you push it all the way forward he will run. A digital control would just have him running all the time.

I'll add that an analog stick is also useful for certain dosbox games that expect a joystick. Like flight sims for example.

Some games will have the controls constant pressing left and up without analog controllers.
2 of the games i tested.
