Pi Model or other hardware: Raspberry Pi 3 Model B Rev 1.2
      Power Supply used: usb
      RetroPie Version Used: 4.6.2
Built From: Upgrade from an earlier version
USB Devices connected: just power supply
      Controller used: 8bitdo
      Error messages received: none
      Verbose log (if relevant): none
How to replicate the problem: After upgrading to 4.6.2 and stretch (I was on Jessie and an older version of Retropie, unfortunately don't remember which one.)

Everything works after the upgrade except when I select a game the screen goes to the terminal for 2 seconds (it doesn't show the runcommand screen) then loads the game as normal. Certain menu items also take me to the terminal instead of showing the proper menu, e.g. raspi-config takes me to terminal. Sometimes, I eventually get back to the emulation station, but most times I need to log in via ssh and reboot.

Any thoughts on how I can get the run command menu to display again?

Without an error message to know why this doesn't work, it's difficult to speculate. Maybe the dialog binary is broken ? Upgrading in place is not recommended (even by the Raspbian folks), so maybe it's something that wasn't upgraded properly (library/configuration?).

@mitu Yeah -- there's no error message readily available when the runcommand dialog isn't shown. I should probably just do a clean install since that is the recommended route, likely something didn't upgrade correctly at you say.
