Fair enough on Killing Time, I think it is just the way it is right now.
I just played Killing Time (Apr 28, 1997 prototype) for PlayStation 1 (using pcsx-rearmed) yesterday ... man, runs silky smooth and fast compared to the 3D0 version :)
It locked up on me after several minutes ... but didn't have time to tinker with pcsx-rearmed settings at the time i tried it to see if it was an emulator setting.
Can't give you a link, but google it, and you should find it ;)
I used the *.img file
When you say prototype, is it the full game? I am interested.

@AdamBeGood Would you mind sharing your lr-opera settings? The glitches in Myst and Star aren't game-breaking but they're fairly annoying, especially as the games are some of the smoothest on the system right now.
As for Wolfenstein 3D, after a bit of research it seems to be an improved rendition of the same port that was released on Mac/Jaguar/SNES/Apple IIGS, and it seems to have altered layouts of all the levels. I tried installing the PC port on the RPi 3 earlier this year, with very little success, although truth be told until yesterday I did not think I liked this game so I did not try overly hard. I may try and get it to work in dosbox although the prospect of playing a FPS with a keyboard and mouse is horrid to me ^^ (please don't judge me ^^)
With Killing Time, after reflection I think it worked a little bit better with an overclock, at least in the labyrinth. Apparently the system as a whole runs a lot better on Lakka, but I don't really know much about it and I've become too attached to Retropie to actually really consider trying it, but that may be something to consider if you really want to squeeze more performance out of your machine for this specific game? When I get a moment, let me double check that I don't see those glitches. If I don't, are there any specific settings that you would like to see?
Wolf 3D port must be pretty easy to set up now as I've done it! Works with pad also. I will judge on the keyboard and mouse control point, but each to their own! :p
-
@AdamBeGood Thanks, I'm mostly interested in the settings in your retroarch quick menu, as I'm thinking (hoping) that the glitch comes from there.
'Wolf 3D port must be pretty easy to set up now as I've done it! Works with pad also.'
Now that sounds good, I've never managed to wrap my head around a keyboard and mouse setup ^^
EDIT : Never mind, I think I found the issue. The timing hack for Alone in the Dark was left on, and it was causing the graphical issues I was experiencing. Star Control 2 is glorious now!

Excellent news! How did Alone in the Dark run for you? My sound was a bit weird, I've deleted it and will use the DosBox version.
-
@AdamBeGood Alone in the dark ran full speed for me even before I Overclocked, however just like you the sound was horrendous - lovecraftian even ^^
However, I've just managed to run Road Rash and Inmercenary, both full speed, oh and Doom, if that matters ^^
Has anybody had any luck with Return Fire?
-
Alone in the Dark uses a feature of the DSP that isn't properly implemented. It's a well known issue and on the "todo".
There should be no difference generally between Lakka and Retropi unless Retropi is compiling stuff differently (seems unlikely) or maybe using a different video output (perhaps).
-
@trapexit Good to know.
But to be honest it's already quite impressive (for me anyway) to see the 3DO run as well as it does on a single-board computer that costs thirty-five quid!

Hear, hear! This is true.

Does it look as good as the 3DO version though?
The PS1 version looks brighter and does look better with the pcsx-rearmed High Resolution option turned On ... effectively doubling the internal resolution. (Screenshots from the Pi4 below 3do left/PS1 right)
But, the framerate of the PS1 version is running at least at 60fps ... maybe even higher ! Silky Smooth and Fast.
-
@ReadyPlayaWon Well that's a no brainer then.
The PS1 had a surprising catalogue of great first person shooters. Powerslave is awesome. It also had Po'ed which is on the 3DO and I believe runs full speed (I'll have to check).

I haven't played through the whole game to answer that question (busy with other games)
But the debug menu in the game lets you select the "Starting Zone" of which there are 58 Chapter levels of game story to choose from.
The unreleased prototype weighs in at 653MB.

Agree. And yes Powerslave is a great game ! it's a shame on PS1 they changed a few things from the Sega Saturn version which was the first version i played when released.
This video shows the differences between the versions.
-
@ReadyPlayaWon I thought it was a straight port! I never knew there were differences, as I never had the chance to play the Saturn version.
Still, the PS1 port is excellent. I played through it this April and loved every minute of it. -
@ReadyPlayaWon Amazing, I'll get on Prototype Killing time then!

It looks good to me! That's great. I wish I hadn't persisted with the 3DO version for quite so far into the game, but happy to start again.
Edit: I've played a bit of PSX Killing Time now and there are some graphical issues in the initial maze but nothing major. I've also had a jam on a loading screen during the game, so save often!
-
Has anybody figured out an elegant way to not have the .cue files show up in your 3DO gamelist?
-
@Zering not sure why they would show up as cue files rather than the games unless emulationstation is misconfigured, the 3do entry in your es_systems.cfg should only be looking for *.cue and *.chd. You could also save some space, and convert your cue/bin into chd...

+1 for chd :)
I've converted all my Dreamcast, PlayStation 1, Saturn and 3DO roms to *.chd and it saves a ton of space ! plus it's nice and neat having just "1" file for a game.
I remember reading somewhere people saying the *.chd files take longer to load or introducing longing loading times in games .... i honestly can't say i have not noticed any of that happening. If it is happening .... then those people must be talking about milliseconds.
P.S. For anyone playing PSP Games ... you can also shrink your ISO files significantly as well to CSO files.
The tool linked below works great !
-
@ReadyPlayaWon I'll think about that! Those systems do take up a lot of room.
My es_systems.cfg has .iso and .cue under <extension/>, no .chd though.

My efg_systems.cfg has .iso and .cue under <extension/>, no .chd though.
well, edit it to include it :) ... it's just a simple text edit to modify it (i use WinSCP ... and just double click on the es_systems.cfg to edit)
for 3D0 mine is this ..
<extension>.cue .iso .chd .CUE .ISO .CHD</extension>
i only include uppercase if my caps lock key gets stuck ;)
