I am new to retropie and when I tried to play golden eye 64 from 2 different websites and added them to my retropie after I try to run the game I get a prompt that reads "Errors Logged at dev/shm/runcommand.log" and after that it returns me to the N64 game selection menu I also tried this with Mario cart for the n64 and the same exact thing happens

Well it tells you where your error message is, but not what the error is.

It would be highly beneficial if you could copy the content of that file here.

If you do not know how to access it, you can alternatively type

              cat /dev/shm/runcommand.log

in the console, this will output the content of the file (in other words: your error log) to the screen.

Is this the full error message?
Normally it should tell you: "[file or folder name]: No such file or directory", and that would tell you exactly what you are missing.
Without knowing what file exactly cannot be found, my best guesses here are that either mupen64plus is not installed or the rom file has been deleted or has wrong permissions.
