Just a quick bit of guidance needed

Most games on mame I am fine with the standard set up for my controls, however a small number I need to change,

Which is better to use to change this,
      A) Setting up a .cfg for the game with the controls defined in there, I am using bezels for most games so these config files already exist

      B) using mame's built in control options (tab - input this game)

Mame's built in controls seem easiest, you can set them within a game and it is just "press button for this action"
however not sure where these setting are stored.

The .cfg files appear to be the most 'robust' way of doing it but will take a lot more time and trial and error setting up (not always clear which button completes which action in game)

setting via a per game retroarch CFG override (gamename.zip.cfg) will also change your hotkey combos (save/load/etc) depending on what you change. the mame tab key is better.

Coool, that's the much easier option,
My intention is to change the setting of any games that I KNOW have funny settings

My standard setup for mame is an 8 button setup laid out as
          1 2 3 7
          4 5 6 8
and this works for most games including 6 button fighters however neo geo needs to be changed to
          1234
          5678
so the controls match neo geo cp,

this will allow me to change other games on the fly as a notice 'wonky' controls

@Andrewpk200 I have per rom .cfg files for most games too, but I find it's easier for many of them to remap using the name GUI. Since I use the arcade folder, I also have FBA games mixed in, so for those in particular I have to use .cfg files. They are a mix of neogeo and fighter games, so, like your setup, the keys are incompatible.
