Making save states kicks me out of of the PS1 emulator without saving anything
-
Hello everyone!
Model: Raspberry Pi 3 model B+
Power Supply used: Sorry, I don't understand what information I have to provide here ( I don't have under voltage problems, if that helps)
RetroPie Version Used: 4.6.6 (although this has happened on older versions as well, I have updated quite a few times since the problems began and it is a reoccurring issue on all version I had)
Built From: I used the official builds from this website
Controller used: HORI ps3 controller
(But this also happens on a different Pi model with a different controller, see below for more info)I have a very annoying problem with the PS1 emulation on my Retropie. And just a heads up, English is not my native language, so sorry for any bizarre phrasing on my part.
Often when I make a save state the game kicks me out back to the game list menu, without saving the game. Any In-Game saves I made during the playing session are then gone (I instead have just the former last In-Game saves from the previous session when I managed to properly exit the game.) And almost always my Pi does not create a save state and instead when I go back into the game the former save state is still there, meaning my whole progress is gone. And I wrote “almost always”, because once a save state was created while I was playing “Chrono Cross”, but for some reason the save state saved me being thrown out of the game, so whenever I loaded this save state the screen went black for a little while and then I was back in the game list menu. That was (thankfully) the only time that happened, because that basically destroyed the whole save state and any progress that was saved with it.
So I tried to play “Saga Frontier” and anyone who has played this game knows what an annoyance the HP-raising and evolving of monsters can be in this game, therefore I rely on save states to significantly lower this, but the save state problem occurs all the time (not every time, but sometimes very often and sometimes it takes a little while, but eventually it starts again). Saving the game In-Game and exiting the game and restarting is not helping, Frequently it is already the first save state I make, that kicks me out. I gave one of the save states from before the "kick out" happening to my friend (who understands much more about the RetroPie and everything concerning it than me, it was actually he who helped me getting a working RP in the first place) and he played for a little and then save stated and repeated this and after a short while the same thing happens on his end as well (he has a different Raspberry Pi, 3B I think, and uses a different controller than me). He is also at a loss how to solve this. I tried if maybe not using a chd compression could solve the problem, no, it happens on both accounts.
Oh I just remember that once loading a save state also kicked me out of the game in the same manner, although I do not really mind about this, since I just restarted the game and the loading worked just fine.
It would be very nice, if someone could help me with this.
If any further info is required, I will do my best to provide, of course. I could also provide the save state I send my friend, so anyone can see for themselves, but I do not know if this is against the rules, I could not find any guidelines on save state sharing here, sorry. Thanks for reading and stay safe.

please provide a verbose log of the crash occurring: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Runcommand/#launch-with-verbose-logging

Thanks for the reply, my friend helped me to get the log, so here goes:

The logs shows multiple save state operations - did you try to save state once or multiple times ? Can you try disabling RetroAchievements and re-try saving the states ?
It might be worth checking the permissions on your.state
files or whether your disc is full - maybe there is not enough space to save the states. -
Thank you for taking the time looking into this. And so far turning the Retroachievements off, might have done the trick. I cannot believe it. I have been playing for over an hour and no more getting kicked out of the game. I will continue playing and post later if this has really been resolved or if I was just lucky.
To answer your questions. I made multiple save states on the same state. I savestated, then played for two/three minutes, then made another and so forth, because like this I was always thrown out of the game in the past.
Concerning the space issue, I have 12GB of free space, so this is not a factor.
And my friend helped me check my .state as you suggested, but already told me that everything looks fine. It stated:
-rw-r--r-- 1 pi pi 1986169 Aug 29 13:35 '/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/psx/SaGa Frontier (USA).state' -
OK, it happened again. I could play for quite a while (over two hours, if I am not mistaken, and created many, many successful save states), but eventually the problem returned even with the retroachievements turned off. Here's the log :
-
Edit
-
Please use pastebin.com for large text posts - logs/configs/etc.
-
OK, done, sorry.
-
OK, there's no much different to the previous log, but there's more save state operations (100 ?). Did you save state for this number of times before the crash ?
I know there's been a number of fixes regarding the menu widgets display - one of them including RetroAchievements, that's why I suggested in a previous post to disable it. You could try to disable menu widgets by editing
retroarch.cfg
in\\retropie\configs\all\
and switching frommenu_enable_widgets = "true"
to
menu_enable_widgets = "false"
-
Thanks again for your time, and no, this has never happened before like this. It occurred much sooner, that was why I thought it might have been fixed, because I could play for so long and make another save state and a minute later another one and another one and so forth. When this first happened some months ago during “Chrono Chross” it was just after a couple of save states. It seems so totally random. Yesterday evening I still played around with this and I made fewer save states and not in this close succession like this one time. It still happened, sometimes I managed to play half an hour, sometimes it was the very first save state, that already kicked me out.
I will implement your suggestion and try it out. I'll post results later. My friend will also try some games for the PS1 today. I suggested to try some Square games, since this is so far only happening on Square games. (Maybe it's like with some of the Disney games.) A couple of months ago I played through the King's Field series and I never encountered anything like this. -
This did not take long... :( Already the second save state crashed the game back to the menu.
