Setting libretro mame pause function to hotkey

Hey all,
Starting a new Pi build and wanted to change some things up
Specifically, Im trying to ADD the ability to activate the pause function of mame to a new hotkey combo of "SELECT+D PAD DOWN"
Ive gone into the retroarch.cfg file and tried changing "input_pause_toggle_btn= p" to the corresponding value of my DPAD DN button but this doesnt seem to work.
Stumped, so any help wuld be appreciated.
