@caver01 Wiki page would be awesome.
I'll second that, your "institutional knowledge" on AdvMAME is a tremendous asset and should be archived for all of time! ;)
I'll keep AdvMAME for the vector games alone and FBA as it seems so optimized for performance but I hope to center my main arcade experience around lr-mame2003 as Dank has fixed pretty much everything on my check list to make it a go.
I think mame4all-pi will be around a long time on merit alone. It works, it's solid, it's small and it covers the "golden era" perfectly not to mention it's been ported to almost every platform. It was sneaked (not snuck? ;) through even on iTunes for about a day and I grabbed a copy before they pulled it due to a terms of agreement violation. I think they had another called Gridlee that was based on 0.139 too but didn't get that one. How they get them through I don't know but they pull them as fast as they publish them. :)

@hakan1708 You can try Pole Position, Turbo, Super Sprint and even Ivan "Ironman" Stewart's Super Off Road. I also have tried old school Night Driver with success.
-
@hakan1708 As far as games that don't seem to work, take a look in MAME GUI and see what THIS GAME controls are listed. It may not be a DIAL input, and if that's the case, you can head back into your .rc file and find the corresponding input and set it up too.
-
@Riverstorm I picked up both iMAME and Gridlee, but I can't add games to these anywhere since Apple locked down access to the subfolders where you would need to drop roms. Unless they can look at the Documents folder. It has been a while since I tried.
I also have the Best Of FTA AppleII emulator on the iPad, but this too requires you to have edit access to sub folders within the app. I could jailbreak, but I can't be bothered by that. I would rather spend time configuring the Pi.

Yeah I tell myself no more and I find myself doing one thing more with RetroPie. I'm not sure as it's been a while for me too but I am using an iPad Air 128GB and it's fully loaded with the complete ROM set and working fine. I think you have to jump through some extra hoops to get at it but it's still possible.
I usually have no issues hacking everything but for some reason I was never compelled to jailbreak an iPad. I thought about it once when I heard ScummVM is workable but also read the on-screen interface was a bit wonky or something. I like the iDevices and have the whole family from the iPad down to the Nano but still prefer a good old fashioned PC. :)
-
@Riverstorm I have the Griddle :) I play sometimes.
-
@caver01 I don't have jailbreak phone but if you use ifunbox you can access your phone apps' folder.
-
@caver01 Thanks. I'll sure play with it.

Yes, but does it let you open the apps themselves? That's the barrier I was running into. It's not enough to see the list of apps. You have to open them and put ROMs into the iMame (or Gridlee) documents sub-folder. If I recall, apple locked this down so you can't get in that deep, but it has been a while since I tried. Maybe the tools are better now.
-
Yes. If you open it with ifunbox, it lets you go to the folder structure and you can copy and paste your roms to the folder.
-
@caver01 ,
Can you tell me where this .rc file is? Is that the full name of the file that I need to edit?
My turbo twist 2 is also not working. I have tried it at the command prompt and it is functioning there. Thanks for all of your help.

@WoodChucksCNC The config files for each version of AdvanceMAME installed by RetroPie are located here:
/opt/retropie/configs/mame-advmame

Thanks for this awesome post. I found it via google search and it allowed advmame to work with a TT2 spinner.
BUT I still haven't found an answer for how to get a spinner to work with other Retroarch platforms like NES or Atari 2600.
Is there a way to get a spinner/mouse to work with Atari 2600....for games like Kaboom, Super Breakout, and the homebrew Stunt Cycle.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

@1500points I wish I knew. I have not looked into it, but if you find out, please let us know.

I did more googling and ran across a reference that it needed to be a reminder on github. So it looks to me like it is currently a no-go beyond advance mame in Retropie.
Here is the specific thread that needs comments added to get it supported-
https://github.com/libretro/stella-libretro/issues/22 -
@1500points Well now, hold on. The spinners do work fine in lr-mame2003. I thought you might have already known that. Certainly, AdvanceMAME has the most flexibility when it comes to multiple devices, assigning axes and so on, but lr-mame2003 has basic support for 2-axis input. This allows trackballs to work for games like centipede and marble madness. There is also a core option you can enable that splits the x and y among players 1 and 2 which enables two spinners on the same controller to work for games like Blasteroids, or for driving games, etc.
It's still in support of arcade games, not consoles like you suggested, so the same titles are covered, but it is handy to run these with Retroarch to take advantage of other benefits as opposed to just AdvanceMAME.

updating this thread.
Some benefits of using a mouse based spinner, after experimenting-
--works with all arcade games that used paddle or spinner.
--no dead spots like using joystick axis'
--no calibration needed to make the player have full range movement
--and here is the great one....they work properly in RetroPie using Stella for the 2600 games! Kaboom feels nice and quick. Now if I could figure out why Stella won't work properly on the cancel mapping to exit out of the emulator back to the Emulation Station menu.
LR-stella uses the retroarch settings to cancel out no problem, but no matter what i try for mapping in the stella UI (tab on keyboard) it will only respond to canceling out with the Escape key on the keyboard. -

Is that not adequate? Since the standalone version does not pick up on retroarch hotkeys, it makes sense that it relies on a single key mapping for exit. Are you trying to get out of it using a key combo or a gamepad button?
-
@1500points I assume you have seen this which describes the two input modes. Are you perhaps remapping exit in UI.Events mode instead of EMUL.events mode? Just guessing. Maybe a combo would work? Mapping your button/key to a combo event, and then chose to exit/close? I will have to look at this. However, I have a dedicated exit button on my system, naturally mapped to ESC.
-
OK, that helped.
Although Keyboard ESC is the Cancel and would take you back to ES, mapping anything else wouldn't do it.
But the EMU UI key was called Quit and mapped to Control-Q, it did allow an alternate mapping to close the game back to ES.
All good.I tried lr-stella but it doesn't have the Tab UI settings and would only work with the joypad, the mouse controls were ignored. So that is not useful for spinners.
Really impressed with how well the 2600 games work with this spinner. Couldn't be happier.
Thanks for all the insights!
