@gizmo90 Your post contains nothing - what exactly are looking for ? The RetroArch's configuration hierarchy is explained in https://retropie.org.uk/docs/RetroArch-Configuration/#config-hierarchy.

@mitu Apologies for this. It seems the formatting on mobile might have contributed to how this post came out and the lack of the link mentioned.

The image I'm after was created by @Floob and is a flow chart which apparently explains/simplifies the override settings and other save settings in a easy to understand manner. Here's the link where it's mentioned.

Basically I'm having an extremely hard time understanding why I can't get a game's specific video settings to save. And each time I try to understand the myriad of ways in which settings are saved via retroarch I get extremely confused. I feel like I'm doing something intrinsically wrong or not understanding the relationship between things. If I could find something straight forward to follow on how have my settings set to a default way and then steps to alter and save a single game's settings, I'd really appreciate it.

Have you looked at the documentation page I posted ? The image in question might explain the same thing or be outdated enough to not apply anymore to current RetroPie versions.

If there's something that's not working for you, then why aren't asking about it straight-up ?

@mitu Thanks again. Yep I've looked at the documentation page and nothing there seems to point to the issue I'm having. I can't seem to get my video settings to be saved. The only way to do this seems to be via 'Save Game Overrides' which doesn't work for me. Each time I reload a title whose settings I've changed, the same old settings are loaded. I've was wondering if there was some other setting which might be interfering with this?

The specific setting I'd like to set for certain games is Integer ON/OFF. In my use case, SMW requires that it be turned off to be displayed properly. I don't know if it's relavent but each time the title is loaded I get the following in yellow text at the bottom of the screen.
              Failed saving config to "apt/retropie/configs/snes/retroarch.cfg"
Is the retroarch.cfg the file that holds the Integer value? If so I don't understand why it can't be loaded as each time I initiate a save game override it says settings saved?

This looks like a permissions problem. There is also a recent issue with RetroArch not saving the configuration (reported here), which should be solved if you update the RetroArch packag from source.

Override saving might also be an issue with permissions - check the permissions on the following folders:

                • /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch
                • /opt/retropie/configs/snes
