system volume keeps resetting to 0; no system sounds
-
Hello!
I have a raspberry pi 4. I'm using the standard retro pie installation. I have 2 HDMI monitors connected, and audio going to an amp via the 3.5 mm jack. Game sounds work great! Everything there is working perfectly fine.
However, I don't hear any system sounds when navigating emulation station. And when I go to the audio menu, the volume is always set to 0. If I up it to 100% and back out of the menu, it resets back to 0 next time I open the menu.
I have the Audio Card set to default, and the Audio Device set to PCM.
I've seen a bunch of posts about this problem, but most of them talk about not having any game sound at all, or not being able to run alsamixer. But alsamixer runs fine for me, and like I said, all the game sounds run fine as well.
The only other symptom I'm aware of is that when entering and leaving games I hear a "burp" like noise. Once I'm in the game, everything sounds fine.
If it matters, i'm using lr-mame2003 for all my games.
Any ideas?

Set the audio device to Headphones, this should route the audio via the analog jack. Make sure that - in the Audio menu in RetroPie - you also select the analog audio.

@mitu thanks for the response. I set the audio device to “headphone”, rebooted, and now the volume slider works!!! Thank you!
But I still don’t hear navigation sounds. I can’t find this “analog” audio setting you are referring to. Which menu/tool is it in?

FYI, you don't need to reboot when changing these settings.

In EmulationStation, there's a RetroPie system. One of the entries is Audio. If you don't get sounds, check the EmulationSettings and make sure they are enabled. Some themes might not have navigation sounds set, if you're not using the default (Carbon) theme, then you can switch to it and see if navigation sounds work.

@mitu you are totally right. I switched to carbon and everything sounds great. Thanks for the help.
