Console text displaying over some emulators ^[[

I have Retropie running on an Odroid xu4 with xbox360 controllers, in some emulators the actions on the on the controlloers are then dislayed on the screen as console text eg. ^[[A
The text starts in the top left hand cornor of the screen and repeated along the top row and then on to the next row, the letter change depending on which button or movement is made on the controller. This text ends up covering over areas of the game.
Any ideas on how this can be prevented this from happening.
