I'm trying to set up my first PS1 .iso, and I'm not sure what options I might be able to use.

      I'm using RetroPie 4.7.1 on a Pi4B 4GB with the lr_pcsx_rearmed core.

Using the (mostly) 2D game Mickey's Wild Adventure as an example. The game was only released in the European regions, so I've set my video mode to 50Hz, and my TV shows that it is working at 50Hz.

This video shows that the background layer is (and should be) smooth (not pixelated), and scrolls smoothly:

Watching the demo scenes on my Pi4, the main game elements seem good, and sprites seem smoothly animated, but the background layer that I see is not smoothed, and judders as it scrolls. What's going on?

Is this expected on a Pi4 or are there options that I can set to get a look more like in the video?

(Edit: I fixed the non-functioning controllers problem described below by editing /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch-core-options.cfg and changing both
pcsx_rearmed_multitap1 and pcsx_rearmed_multitap2 from auto to disabled, described here: [https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/28676/retroarch-psx-controller-mapping-not-working-post-update/14](link url) )

Also, my controllers work fine in other emulators (for example lr-snes9x), but the controllers are not functional in the game in lr-pcsx.

I can use the hotkeys to browse and control the retroarch RGUI, but I cannot press the start button to start this game. (The background animation judders and the pixels are visible when it plays itself as a demo).

I'm pretty sure the "Enhanced resolution (slow)" core option was the cause of the judder in the background layer. I've set it back to it's default (off) and the background scrolls smoothly now.

Try changing the controller type from DualShock to standard.

Thx - I managed to fix this problem with the multitap emulation option - I made an edit/update below: https://retropie.org.uk/forum/post/248454
