Hi everyone, apologies this has been asked a million times before, but I must be doing something wrong but I can't quite figure out what.

I have this [Arcade joystick](https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01HJKLAV6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and buttons setup with my RetroPie. Each time I turn on the Pi I get the "Welcome 1 gamepad detected" message. I then proceed to configure it mapping all of my keys which seem to work for a short period in the platform selection menu.

I can choose a game successfully but when the games starts to load it comes up " Dragonrise Inc. (Generic) USB joystick not configured" and I can't play the game. If I exit out with the keyboard, the joystick and buttons don't work in the menu again.

I have Googled the life out of it and tried every suggestion going. I thought I was onto a winner with this [post](https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/2064/controller-works-in-menu-but-not-in-game-and-some-games-don-t-launch as it sounds the same RetroPie forums and then I also tried the steps from this [German guide](https://www.retro-programming.de/retro-welt-2/hardware/raspberry-pi-als-emulator-retropie/retropie-controller-einrichten/. Changing the controller settings in RGUI seemed to work again until I launch a game and when I reboot it asks me again to configure a game pad.

Can anyone put me out of my misery please?

Are you using a "normal" RetroPie image? Can you provide details per https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first?

Did you delete the es_input.cfg file from EmulationStation's configuration folder ($HOME/.emulationstation) ?
