Arcade Outrun

Morning Folks, you can call me "Schrockie"
I recently purchased Raspberry 3 B+ and got retropie card from my brother who got it from a friend and so on. The ES (Emulation Station) is a V 2.7.6 RP, if that means anything(R,P)). Also, I'm using an XBox wired controller, it's old.
I'm playing Sega's Outrun on the "Arcade" ES, the joystick is fine, but, do I have the option of moving the gas(RT), brake(LT) and shifter around(A,B,X,Y)?
Thanks

@schrockie71 Welcome to this forum, Schrockie.
See https://retropie.org.uk/docs/RetroArch-Configuration/#core-input-remapping for how you can change controls in RetroPie, at least for all emulators whose name begins with "lr-". They are based on the multi emulation core system RetroArch/Libretro (hence the "lr") and share a unified configuration interface.
Your version of ES is rather old, as 2.9.6 RP is the current one. I suggest updating the image like its described in the Docs. But be sure to make a backup of the card before that.
That said, with a couple of unknown previous owners of the card, we can't be sure if it's based on (which version of) the official image, and how much it was changed by your precursors. So it may be seen as a "third party image" which we don't support in this forum, because we can't know if your problems stem from some of those changes.
Thus, if you run in more problems than this one, the best way would be to backup the card and install the current RetroPie image from here. Many here will gladly help you with that.
Finally, please read https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first to learn what information is expected when asking for help here.
Have fun with RetroPie!

From reading this, i'm guessing you are using FBNeo. Sure, you can move around controls in Retroarch's
Quick Menu > Controls
, however keep in mind there is a very good reason i mapped gas/brake to analog trigger buttons by default : those actions on the original cabinet were analogs (pedals), simple on/off buttons like a/b/x/y won't be able to fully emulate a pedal's behavior. For the same reason it's preferable to use left analog stick over dpad for wheel's emulation, even if FBNeo supports both by default. -
@clyde Thanks for the quick response, checking out what you had posted about reconfig my controller. Would that affect every game or just "Outrun"? I already have the backup! I thought I've already did an update via the ES but, apparently, I didn't!?!?

@barbudreadmon Thanks for a quick response, as far as I know I probably have a few dozen emulators(?FBNeo?) I have a 256GB chip with over 15,000 games.
As for the controller, the left joystick controls the steering wheel, as for the triggers(LT, RT which would tickle me pink), RB changes the gears, the B button is the accelerator and A button controls brake. No trigger action going on at all!

This kind of answer is quite typical so i'll say it : using 3rd party images is breaking retropie rules (https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first).

It was written in the 1st post "got it from my brother who got it from a friend and so on".

Oh, yeah, i didn't see that, i guess it's another way to break that rule.

To all of you, I am Truly Sorry if I did anything WRONG.
Now can we get back to the case at hand: Fixing my controller and/or Outrun program itself, or showing/sending me the ROM to replace it. I have zero knowledge of Coding. The only programming I have was way back in the mid to late 80's in high school. -
@schrockie71 we don't support 3rd party images, especially the ones loaded/sold with ROMs. You'll have to ask the seller/author of the image for help.
