c64 vice emulator issues, run but not start games

I have searched the internet for over two hours, I really have looked, why do I get issues no one else has had :-P

so I updated c64 (vice) onto my r-pi 4 and uploaded the roms, absolutely fine, well, the c64 folder did not show so one guide said to add it manually, so this solved that issue.

now, I can view and load the roms fine, I have all of them, I have loaded over 40+ and they all load fine and I see the game start screen on all of them, now here is my issue.

when I press ANY button, I get the vice emulator config screen, I cannot start any game!

I have gone through all the button configurations, all looks ok (including the direct vice controller config) all to no avail, the main vice config screen shows start rom at the top, with a huge list of things that to be honest is way beyond my knowledge.

so ....little help...why can I actually play anything.

EDIT - ohh, yeah, all other emulators work fine with no issues.

@dankcushions hiya, I seam to be able to configure everything as far as I know and can test, I am actually thinking the game is not loading properly, how long should it take before the game start screen actually shows? and should I get the loading scribbles in the background?
