I just want to do the most basic thing, use an Xbox 360-style USB controller with my newly installed RetroPie system, yet I have to press a zillion buttons to map the buttons to my controller. If I get one wrong, I can't even start over, Now I have a badly mapped XBox 360 controller that I can't use or re-map.
      (1) Can I just choose my controller from a list of known, standard controllers? Why make me map every single button when all I want is the basic, default choices?
      (2) If I made a mistake -- how do I re-do it?

        1. no.

Edit: 1a) because RetroPie's fork of EmulationStation configures more than just ES's own menu controls. It also sets up the RetroArch controls and hotkeys, and the stand-alone N64 emulator.

        1. if you mess up you can power it on with no controller connected. It should run the autoconfig dialog since no configured input device is detected; then you can plug in the controller and reconfigure.

Open the EmulationStation menu and go to Input configuration, you'll be able to do the initial configuration again.

The problem with that is, how to open the menu to configure your controller, with a mis-configured controller?

If ES is unusable with the chosen input configuration (i.e. no up/down/start/A buttons mapped correctly, even though Up/down/A are mandatory in the input mapping, so you won't be able to complete the configuration without mapping them), then you can reset the configuration from RetroPie-Setup from Manage Packages >> Manage Core Packages >> EmulationStation >> Configuration / Options >> Clear / Reset EmulationStation Input Configuration.

@sleve_mcdichael Just my 2 cents here but a USB keyboard should always be set up as well for times like this. Whenever something happens you can reconnect the USB keyboard and have a backup control to fix the other issues. Then unplug it when you're done with it. :)
