Raspberry Pi 5 - official announcement
-
Yeah I've been really impressed so far!
-Model 1 and two games run pretty much full speed in Make 0.261 (which only took about two hours to build). Virtua fighter 3 is slow, but not a slide show!
-most PS2 games I've tried are playable to some extent (though generally with the software renderer for some reason?)
-Dolphin performance night and day with pi4 too!
Is there a way of setting an emulator quit button for Dolphin Standalone or Aethersx2? I feel like I'm being dense 😁
-
@mechafatnick Not really no for the standalone Dolphin or AetherSX2 problem. That I've been able to find. Using dolphin-emu-nogui stops hotkeys from working, so you have to killall out get out. AetherSX2 you can setup a button to get to the menu or to kill the emulation, but that leaves you stuck in the menu screen.
dolphin-emu I've gotten hotkey and the controller working, but I can't get it fullscreen and it'll only open in a small window in the top left corner

The fix is already done, it will be part of the next RP kernel release (6.6). In the mean time, enabling VSync should fix the issue for most SDL2 standalone applications.
The fix I think has been backported into 6.1.
And it's now part of the kernel installed with the regular
apt
updates, so there is no need to runrpi-update
anymore. -
@mechafatnick what Model 1 and 2 games are you running on Mame?
-
@retropieuser555 i haven't figure out yet how to start the games with the standalone Dolphin. What instructions did you follow ?
*I found the commands in a post above, sorry to mentioned you.
By the way, Kodi is installing fine, thanks devs for the fix.

I tried VF2, Sega Rally, VF1 and Star Wars Arcade
-
@mechafatnick Have you tried Sonic the fighters aka Sonic Championship?

I've got a rather odd one.. Thanks to the advice here on the kernel, I've been able to get my new pi5 working just like my pi4 with one key exception..
There are some oddities with my 8bitdo SN30 Pro usb controllers. Sometimes when booting up they aren't recognized at all the xpad kernel module doesn't load. Other times they are recognized, but both light up only 1 led indicating they are both "player 1" and only one of them actually is detected and works. The same controllers work fine on my old pi4 setup. I am wondering if it is because the pi5 shows 2 different usb2 buses with 1 device each (and 2 different usb3 buses but the controllers don't need that speed) while the pi4 showed 1 usb2 bus with 2 devices on the same bus.
Any thoughts on how to correct the issue, maybe a boot or kernel module parameter?

Re: Model 1 and Model 2 on Pi 5: This is my experience.
Model 1:
Virtua Fighter seems to run at full speed for me, though I am not sure what bugs might exist for this game to be listed as not working. Virtua Racing is a buggy mess. The track and the other racers are all missing. All I see is my own car and the background, and I don't think the controls are working either. The same ROM/BIOS in lr-mame on Windows works fine, though, so something is not right on Pi here. Anybody got any ideas? A similar issue was mentioned on MAME's bug reports but was apparently fixed.Model 2:
Virtua Fighter 2 runs at about 72% speed for me if I use Libretro MAME 0.222. It's a bit slower than that in current lr-mame for me. Rail Chase 2 is at a completely unplayable 20%ish speed for me.@mechafatnick what speeds are you getting in VF2 and Sega Rally?

@retropieuser555 I read the instructions but i didn't understand very well what i have to do, i read and your comment that you have issues to exit from the emulator and i leaved it for now. ~windg~
-
I try to install the desktop from the RetroPie option and it's working. The only strange thing was the update notification to install sdl2 2.26. I choose it but nothing happen.
-
Is anyone else having any odd USB issues with their pi5?
-
@zaphod24 The only issue i have so far, is that the system can't boot from a certain usb card reader i have. The same device, is working with older Pi models.
-
@zaphod24 My pi5 will sometimes not detect my wired 8bitdo controller unless I re-insert it but I haven't tried it lately to see if a firmware update fixed it. I boot RetroPie from a usb stick and my roms are on second usb stick. Those work fine.
-
@Darksavior do you have one or two controllers? I have two and the second one doesn't detect/work and the first is hit and miss whether it detects or not.. If it does not, it usually will the next reboot or power cycle.

Anyone with a 8GB fancy a challenge and attempting the Ocarina of Time PC Port:-
https://github.com/HarbourMasters/Shipwright/issues/3870
I got right to the end and ran out of memory when compiling as I have a 4GB rather than 8GB Pi 5

Add more swap ?
-
@retropieuser555 I don't have the know how for such a task but do let me know when it's done as I'll be all over that :)

Perfect, that did the job (https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/35182/guide-how-to-add-ocarina-of-time-pc-port-to-retropie-pi5-64bit for help).
I just followed Ship of Harkinain's Linux build instructions and followed a guide to change the swap memory from 100mb to 1024mb.
Haven't tried mod packs yet but 60 FPS works very nicely. Also there's no way to exit without using a mouse and keyboard yet, I might add a check in the guide+start SDL buttons so we can quit out, seeing as the PC Port is designed with desktops in mind
