@sugarfree I installed and configured SplashScreen on Pi 5, and Emulation Station always crashes when I reboot the system.
RetroPie and system versions are up to date -

Any news or update on the PreMade images for the Pi 5?
I remember when the PI 4 was released and the premade was out in 6months..Sort of curious what's taking so long, unless it really is much more complicated.

I remember when the PI 4 was released and the premade was out in 6months..The Pi 4 was released on June 24th, 2019.
The first Retropie build wasn't until April 28th, 2020 so nearly a year, and that was also a beta build.
The first official Pi 4 build, meaning non-beta wasn't until November 2nd 2020 so that was a full 17 months after the Pi 4 build was released.

Thank you for the correction!
Didn't seem that long, but I think I know why.
I remember the 4s in the ram size I wanted being sold out for a while, and when I finally got one the build was released like a few months later.Either way, thanks!
Still hope to see a 5build sometime. soon. -

What, if any, implications would this have on RetroPie and it's use of X? Would we look to switch away from X? Or carry on with that indefinitely?

None for the moment, since RetroPIe doesn't depend on Xorg/X11. The Bookworm release alreadt had Wayland by default for PI4/5, but the compositor choice (
wayfire
) has made it difficult to make it default on Pi3 and earlier, hence the switch to a new compositor (labwc
):Closer investigation revealed labwc to be a much better fit for the Raspberry Pi graphics hardware than wayfire.
In RetroPie, Wayland is offered when you install the desktop. It used to be Wayfire, but in anticipation of the new release, I've added
labwc
instead [1]. We can also remove the Pi4/Pi5 gating, though I'm probably going to expose Wayland/Labwc only for Pi3 and wait for the 1st RaspiOS revision afterlabwc
is introduced.[1] https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/compare/master...cmitu:RetroPie-Setup:labwc-bookworm

Is there a good case solution for a Pi5 with an M2 SDD Hat?
-
Does anyone have experience with basilisk ii on the rpi5? Or has anyone gotten it to work? I just can't get it to start:
ERROR: Not enough free memory.
-
@Swampy Not saying it’s the cause, but how much memory do you have? The error seems to point in that direction.
-
@pjft Which memory is meant? I have an rpi5 8gb. Unfortunately I have no idea about the memory management of the rpi5. I tried increasing the emulator's internal memory in the configuration file. Without result.
-
@Swampy That’s a great question then, and one I don’t have an answer to. I’d potentially just try to add more swap memory, but I doubt that’d be the case with 8GB of RAM. I’d wait for others to reply then. Sorry for not being able to help further, just wanted to exclude the easy symptom first. There’s video memory as well, though I can’t say I remember how it works on the Pi 5 right now.
-
@pjft Bit of an aside, the default for swap memory on the most recent raspberry pi OS update changes the default from 100mb to 512mb. So we might find the need to change the swap memory for specific instances (2s2h on RetroPie Extras for example needs it I think) will disappear
-
@retropieuser555 Cool. Didn’t know that. To be fair, my only experience with messing with swap memory on RetroPie was to compile MAME from source, so it’s good that you’re aware of other needs so we adjust when needed!

thats correct.
it is increased to build and then it resets back to normal

@Jiryn I've just installed a HatDrive! Nano, a 256GB SSD and Active Cooler all in the official Pi 5 case.
-
@capcob I bought a Vilros case and it didn't fit... so I'll look into that.
Is there a heat sink on your processor? This case?
I didn't think it'd fit.
This is what I got, can't put the hat on.

I'm locking this topic, it has become a dumpster for any issue or question related to the Pi5 or the new RasiOS Bookworm.release.
@Jiryn feel free to open a separate topic for your question.
