I did a sudo rpi-update and now my retropie system does not boot. I want to kill myself
Is there a chance to recover from this or save information from SD card without making a fresh re-install?

rpi-update creates a backup, but you'll need a Linux system to read and restore it - see https://github.com/Hexxeh/rpi-update/issues/273.
