Unable to progress through configuration of gamepad1
-
Good afternoon,
I've had a search through the forums and I can't find a good match (most can't start the configuring or the device is not recognised).
TLDR; I am not able to skip configuring the gamepad by pressing and holding a button that has been assigned already.I have downloaded and installed Retropie using the raspberry pi image loader and the image that it comes up with in the selector. Had a bit of trouble initially as I was sure this was a Pi 3, but it wasn't and the Pi1 image installed and works.
On first time start retropie runs through the text loader, shows the retropie splashscreen, does more text loader and then runs through emulation station (cycling through each of the systems).
I get the Welcome screen then and it informs me that 1 gamepad detected. The gamepad it is detecting is the Competition Pro Extra USB joystick I have, which has 4 directions and 4 buttons. It's detecterd as an Speedlink Competition Pro Game Controller for Android when I press a button.
So, as expected, I press a button for a few seconds and the "Configuring Gamepad 1" screen comes up.As expected I start running through the directions. Forward for D-PAD up, Back for D-PAD down, etc, which all work. These are detected as Axis 1+ and - and Axis 0 + and - as expected. I then try two different buttons for start and select, which are identified as button 4 and button 1 respectively.
The next option that comes up is where I get stuck. It asks for Button A / EAST, but I don't have anything for that. So instead I press button 4 again and hold it down, which is supposed to skip. Unfortunatly it doesn't, no matter how long I press it. When I release the button it says "Already Taken" and no amount of pressing and holding any of the already configured items works.
Now, there are two other buttons on the joystick I can use, but I want them to be fire buttons. I did try using one of those and the skip option did work after, but of course the button was then (incorrectly) defined when I came to the fire button options (I've gone through this burn image, try buttons cycle a few times). How can I skip the Button A / East (and other options I don't have)?

You can't. Some buttons are required, since they are used to launch games and/or navigate the EmulationStation front-end. A and B are such buttons and they cannot be skipped.
You can however map your keyboard to navigate EmulationStation as you'd like. Of course, you'll need to configure your gamepad manually in the emulators started, since it's not configured by EmulationStation.
