No welcome screen
-
I have just downloaded the latest and greatest RetroPi 4.8 and used rpi-imager to copy the image to a micro-SD card. I have inserted the card into a Pi 400 and powered it on. Power is being supplied by a official Pi power supply.
The Pi boots up and according to the instructions I was expecting to get a welcome screen and instructions to configure the controller. The controller is a Logic 3. Instead what happens is that the system dropps out to a command prompt. There are no error messages, just status messages and the RetroPi ascii banner. In effect, the system seems to have started normally. The keyboard and ssh work fine.
How do proceed to the welcome screen?

@lonestar What happens if you type
emulationstation
and press Enter ? Are you sure you have downloaded the correct image for your Pi model ? -
@mitu I downloaded the Raspbeery Pi4/400 image.
Typing emulationstation does start up the emulationstation app, and this is what I get:
WE CAN'T FIND ANY SYSTEMS!
CHECK THAT YOUR PATHS ARE CORRECT IN THE SYSTEMS CONFIGURATION FILE, AND YOUR GAME DIRECTORY HAS AT LEAST ONE GAME WITH THE CORRECT EXTENSION.VISIT EMULATIONSTATION.ORG FOR MORE INFORMATION.
Sorry for the caps but that is how it appears along with a QUIT button. None of the buttons on the controller worked but <Return> got me back out to the command prompt. I haven't got as far as installing any games yet.

That's weird, since the RetroPie image has EmulationStation pre-installed and set to auto-start.
Try re-imaging the scard, but download the image directly from RPI imager, without downloading it first - RetroPie is listed under Gaming OSes in the imager list. -
@mitu Thank you. I think I have sorted it.
When I imaged the card using rpi-imager, I had set a profile, which included SSH settings and other things such as setting my user name. The default scripts assume the user account will be Pi. After a bit of research I found that I could just edit /etc/emulationstation/es_settings.cfg and change the username in each emulator profile. I then copied the file to ~/.emulationstation and emulationstation then started.
I was prompted to configure my controller which I did and could then set up some games.
I do have a couple of other problems but will start another thread.

@lonestar I advise you to keep the default username and not change it, if you're using the RetroPie image.
