Hi, I'm new here and also pretty new to the raspberry pi. I have a raspberry pi 5, and know that it isn't officially supported by retropie. However, I followed this tutorial step-by-step: https://github.com/danielfreer/raspberrypi5-retropie-setup/tree/main

I did this with ssh into the raspberry pi after installing the Raspberry Pi OS Lite 64 bit onto the 64gb sd card. My rpi has 8gb of ram.

The first time I plugged it into a monitor, I got the message 'Emulation Station crashed!'. I know there have been other posts with this issue, but none of them seem to apply to me, as I do not have a controller (I am planning on using a USB keyboard), and this is my very first time plugging it in (after a headless install of retropie following the guide previously mentioned).

Can anyone help me? On the alert it says 'Check your rom file/folder permissions and if running on a Raspberry Pi, make sure your gpu_split is set high enough and/or switch back to using carbon theme.' I don't really know what this means, can anyone help?

      Thank you very much!

        Welcome to the RetroPie forum.
We have a very few guidelines here. https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first Please respect the time of the guys trying to help here.
TL;DR: Be as specific as you can be to get the most likeliness to get your question addressed. (As a starter: emulationstation has a command line switch --debug)

Specific to the Rpi4 and 64bit RaspiOS it is WIP, you are going out on a limb.
Best would be to table your question at the Github Repo (the one with the guide you followed).

In general starting with an Raspberry Pi is easy, but it is hard to master (thus it is pretty much like many arcade games). You may decide to dig deeper into the Raspberry Pi and learn as you go (which is the purpose IMHO of a Raspberry Pi) or another option is to donate to RetroPie, which fuel the maintainers to propel this project further (and maybe have at some time Pi5 and 64bit RaspiOS in the mainline).

        Have fun.

@i2047 so i had the same problem, but fixed it. the way i fixed it was instead of doing the lite version of RPI OS i did the desktop version and it worked.
