n64 games not launching

I have some n64 roms that I'm trying to play but when I try to load one up (using mupen64plus-next) - the screen flickers once and then it brings me back to the games list in retropie. I saw a post on where this guy was told to add this kernel=kernel8.img, I tried doing that but idk how or where to put it in,
I'm using a raspberry pi 5, 8gb.
Any help is greatly appreciated
