Sorry for thread necro but since this is the first thread about this that Googling "retropie buggy boy" finds, I'm putting the info here:

Buggy Boy seems to be broken in lr-mame2000, 2003 and 2010. Buggy Boy works in lr-mame2010 but lags at higher render resolutions. Buggy Boy is broken in all versions of AdvanceMame. I haven't tried it in the experimental lr-mame2016 because I can't be bothered building it from source. It might work, but it would probably also run like crap.

Power Drift works in lr-mame2010 with moderate but constant slowdown and audio stuttering.

Power Drift works best in advmame, where it seems to run close to fullspeed most of the time, with some occasional dips. Since advmame stretches the audio instead of stuttering when there is slowdown, it feels better to me.

Unfortunately advmame is NOT a libretro core so it's a pain in the ass to configure the controls. If you're having trouble with certain buttons not being recognized, change "device_joystick auto" to "device_joystick sdl" in your advmame.rc file.

Whichever emu you choose, the biggest problem is the steering - this game plays like ass on a controller. Admittedly, i haven't spent much time trying to adjust the analog scales in the emulator but I think it really needs a wheel to be enjoyable.

Hope this information is useful to someone.

@stoo lr-mame2016 works pretty good on a lot of games that get laggy. Use ?f9? to set frameskip to 10 and a lot of games run perfect.

They both work great here. Raspberry Pi 3B+, slightly overclocked. But more importantly, on a CRT - so 240p resolution.

Some pics taken on my phone.

Got to say, both games look amazing on a CRT.

@ i set the Joystick axis in AdvanceMame to both, d-pad & analog stick, in "input general".
So i can play every game with stick as well as with d-pad. Or with both at the same time if i had three hands 😂
Works well with powerdrift and all other games.

BuggyBoy is a Problem indeed with AdvanceMame, wont run.

                  lr-mame2010 - for both games.

Once in the emulator, for Buggy boy, you have to press tab, then goto video and select "screen 1 standard (4:3)". This makes sure you are on the main "middle" screen, as there are 3 screens in the arcade. Not sure if there is a stand-up rom for just one screen.

                    @John_RM_70 @dankcushions

I don't understand then. For me, Power Drift performs the same in both FBA and lr-mame2010: poorly. Even if I drop the rez to 240p there is a lot of audio stutter. AdvanceMame is the only emulator that runs Power Drift acceptably.

I just tried Buggy Boy again (I was using the wrong rom version before) and, yes, it works in lr-mame2010 with some minor audio crackling/stuttering if you drop the retroarch render resolution down to 240p. It doesn't seem to be running badly, so I have no idea why the audio is breaking up slightly.

Fyi, the upright, single-display version is called buggyboyjr.

I find alot of the Sega games best on fba. Altered Beast, Power Drift, the Hang Ons, etc

I would use FBA a lot more, but I don't like the scaling on my CRT - it doesn't look as good as Retroarch.

Thanks for that. It actually works better than the sit-down rom, it's a lot smoother.
