Clarification on best/best supported Raspberry Pi OS version to start manual installation from
-
Hi,
I'm looking to manually build my Retropie image from a Raspberry Pi OS image, following this guide. This is for a Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 Lite, for a Retroflag GPi Case 2. The guide says "NOTE: The Raspberry Pi OS 'bullseye' release is not yet supported by RetroPie. Manual installation should use the previous/legacy release of Raspberry Pi OS, available here." Is this (Buster being the latest fully supported Pi OS release) still the case? If not, what is the latest supported version of Raspberry Pi OS to use as a base?
It looks like the pre-made images are using Buster still, so I guess that is best for me to use. I don't really need my portable retro game device to be particularly up-to-date but security updates for Buster have ended I think, so if I am very unlikely to run into any problems, I guess I'd prefer a newer base system. Ultimately though, I only really intend to connect to my own WiFi network and copy ROMs from my (much more up to date) Linux system on my laptop, so it isn't critical that it has recent security updates.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
In case it is relevant:
Pi Model or other hardware: CM4 Lite with WiFi
Power Supply used: Battery built in to Retroflag GPi Case 2
RetroPie Version Used (eg 3.6, 3.8.1, 4.1 - do not write latest): Planning to use 4.8 or whatever is latest when I do this.
Built From: This is what my question is about, but I am guessing I will use this one linked from the guide
USB Devices connected: Retroflag GPi Case 2 devices only.
Controller used: Retroflag GPi Case 2
Error messages received: None yet
Guide used: Manual installation guide in the docs -
While we haven't released any image or official support info for more recent RaspiOS, there is beta level support for the latest RaspiOS (based on Debian bookworm). You can use the Lite 64bits image for installation and see how it goes - instructions are similar.
Since you're using it embedded, do note that most of the hdmi parameters for
config.txt
you can find in old Raspbian guides no longer apply. I don't know what kind of support the Retroflag case has for the latest RaspiOS, so I'd check that also before attempting a manual installation. -
@mitu Thanks, I hadn't really considered support with the Retroflag case, and while it looks like the patches it uses probably work whatever the OS version (provided it meets some basic requirements), I am probably best off using the Buster image, at least first go. I'll try that. Thanks!
