Installing LXDE breaks EmulationStation
-
Hello guys
I have a problem with Retropie. Everything worked fine. Then I installed LXDE via the setup script. After the reboot, EmulationStation loads fine. When I try to start LXDE, setup script, an emulator or something else I get an almost black screen with just a very dark logo in the top right. Then nothing more happens and the only thing I can do is to unplug the power.
The same error happens with RetroPie 3.8.1, 4.0.0 and 4.0.2
I have been searching about the error and the only thing I was able to find was another user witht the same error: https://www.reddit.com/r/RetroPie/comments/4w4lr3/installing_lxde_breaks_emulationstation/Any ideas what to do? Or atleast how I can revert it back without having to start with a new image.
Pi Model: RasberrryPi 2
RetroPie Version 3.8.1, 4.0., 4.02
Built From: Pre made SD Image on RetroPie website,
USB Devices connected: Keyboard + WiFi Dongle
Controller used: KeyboardThanks

I had this same issue and could never find a solution for doing it that way.
However, I came across this and it worked perfectly and have been using it since, it even teaches you have to make a selector in part 2
I don't know how you'd do it without a full reinstall though. maybe someone else here can help with that.

(I should also mention that when I tried the overclock portion of this tutorial and it caused my emulationstation to lockup often, so I can't recommend that portion, but the rest worked great)I hope this helps.

Hello,
I've installed Retropie, and performed various post-configurations (bluetooth gamepad etc). I wanted to get a full working desktop in addition so I've installed the Mate desktop (which works great). Then I noticed I couldn't launch any emulationstation entry. I though it was because Mate installed several dependencies and upgraded quite a few packages, so I assumed it broke something in emulationstation.
New install of retropie, and I've only installed lxde through the config menu. And now it's the same, any emulationstation entry (even something light like frotz and a zork game, or the "show my ip" menu) will freeze emulationstation. The screen just turn darker like when it's ok, and before launching the selected game/app, it will remain black (the current menu selection remains barely visible).
The emulationstation log isn't very helpful:
/.../
lvl2: Parsing XML file "/home/pi/.emulationstation/gamelists/vectrex/gamelist.xml"...
lvl1: System "vectrex" has no games! Ignoring it.
lvl1: Unknown platform for system "zmachine" (platform "zmachine" from list "zmachine")
lvl2: Parsing XML file "/home/pi/.emulationstation/gamelists/zxspectrum/gamelist.xml"...
lvl1: System "zxspectrum" has no games! Ignoring it.
lvl0: Tried to use unset setting ShowHidden!
lvl2: req sound [detailed.launch]
lvl2: (missing)Any idea where to investigate?
Maybe some recent changes in Raspian? I've seen after upgrading to lxde and rebooting that my pi was had a new banner: "welcome to pixel".
I'll probably try to download a clean raspian system and install retropie from it, but I find this error rather strange...

I did that, fresh Raspbian install (from latest version on the raspberry pi website), then I installed the Retropie script and it works fine now.

This has happened to me too, with RetroPe 4.0 and Attraction Mode 2.1.0 v05.
I install LXDE and Emulation Station stops loading roms and if goto the RetroPie Setup it asks for login and if I login it justs bring up the command prompt and thats it nothing.
Does anyone know of a fix,I would like to be able to use the Desktop with RetroPie..??
RetroPie should of not being released like this, did they miss this bug..??

I don't think it's a problem from RetroPie, it's just that when upgrading packages, it's from the latest from Raspbian, so an update probably broke something, when earlier it worked correctly.
