      New to Retropie, need some direction on getting samples working for mame2003. I have a set of .78 roms that are working, but I'm really getting frustrated trying to get the samples working.

      The sample files are zipped. I've tried placing them in the \retropie\roms\mame-libretro\mame2003\samples directory, and also in \retropie\bios\mame2003\samples, neither is working.

      The sample files play fine so I'm ruling out corruption.

      Any help is appreciated, thanks!

        You must also have this line:
        mame2003-samples = "enabled"
        in opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch-core-options.cfg

        The second directory you referenced is correct for a Mame2003 samples directory.

          @Dewey68 https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/lr-mame2003#samples says location.

          you didn't say what version of retropie you're using... an issue with samples were fixed a few months ago, so you may need to update retropie or mame2003.

            Thank you sir, this has to be what I'm missing. I'll follow-up when I get home this evening.

              Checked my config file, mame2003-samples = "enabled" is in there. My version of RetroPie is 4.0.2. Updating mame2003 from source right now.

                  @Dewey68

                  Are you using the older samples that are appropriate for the .78 rom set?

                  RetroPie v4.5 • RPi3 Model B • 5.1V 2.5A PSU • 16GB SanDisk microSD • 512GB External Drive

                    It was the samples. I must have gotten some that were for a different rom set. Once I found samples for .78 they work fine. I played some Donkey Kong to verify. Too bad the samples don't work with the other emulators as it seems to me that the controls work better on one of the other emulators. It could just be my controller, I'm using a wireless Xbox 360 controller until I get my controls and cabinet built.

                    Thanks for being so helpful guys and not making fun of the noob!

                    Okay, I see where lr-fba-next will also play samples. I copied the samples into fba folder and the samples work for Galaga, but not Donkey Kong?

                      I ended up setting my left thumb stick in the Retroarch control config menu as my directional input and now the mame2003 games play much better!
