retropie 4 and xin-mo dual

OK have trawled here and the internet to try an get these things working.
I have got the pi to recognise both joysticks js0 and js1 but every time I launch a game in any emulator it comes up as not configured and neither joypad works. I know in mame you have to configure differently but this is in megadrive and snes etc.
I have been trying all the solutions for various versions of retropie but cannot find any that state they are for 4.0.Can I just download an older version from somewhere i.e. 3.8 (a lot of instructions seem to be for that version.)
This is a last ditch attempt before just throwing in the towel and buying some other controllers (wont look as good!!)

I've not got this controller, but I'd start with this guide first if I were you.
