OK have trawled here and the internet to try an get these things working.

I have got the pi to recognise both joysticks js0 and js1 but every time I launch a game in any emulator it comes up as not configured and neither joypad works. I know in mame you have to configure differently but this is in megadrive and snes etc.
I have been trying all the solutions for various versions of retropie but cannot find any that state they are for 4.0.

Can I just download an older version from somewhere i.e. 3.8 (a lot of instructions seem to be for that version.)

This is a last ditch attempt before just throwing in the towel and buying some other controllers (wont look as good!!)

      cheers
      Andy

@andymck I gather you've read and configured as per the wiki? https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/Xin-Mo-Controller

I've not got this controller, but I'd start with this guide first if I were you.

Retropie in a NES - Pi 3 with Mausberry circuit shutdown switch wired to buttons and 8bitdo NesPro30 controller
Retropie in a Saturn Controller - Pi Zero, GPIO controls using DB9 driver
          Retropie in a PSX - Pi3
