Retropie games show on hdmi but not tft
Hi this is my first post and am quite new to raspberry pi so excuse me if i use the wrong termanology :)
Im using the latest retropi image for pi zero,
Official raspberry pi usb hub for power and periferals. An onlive controller over usb and a bluetooth keyboard. Also can ssh using my android phone. Waveshare 3.2 tft v4 screen. So my issue is with retro pi on my pi zero. I had everything working, roms working and playing them on my waveshare v4 3.2 tft screen with no issue. Then i decided the other day i wanted to try the ppsspp emutaltor so i installed that ( took ages :D) but after reboot something odd happened. Retropie boots up and shows on my tft screen no problem, all my emulators show that have roms in....but now when i select a game it starts to load and that grey box comes up where you can press A to change emulator settings and it does not go away. If i then link the pi to my tv through hdmi i can see and play the game. Does anybody have any ideas. Thank you for reading and hope anybody can help.
Regards Simon

@sjpearson i am not sure how to fix but the pi zero cant handle more complex super nintendo games let alone psp games. Even the raspberry pi 3 is crap on most psp games.

I know but i wanted to try anyway....now i have this issue :( not tried many snes games but streetfighter 2 and mario kart worked fine and those are the only two games i want to play on that system :D got the ps1 games i have to run no problem....metal gear solid, tekken 3 and wipeout 3. I did sudo apt-get update/upgrade then updated retropi before installing ppsspp and this issue will not go away :(

I'm having this exact same issue but on my Raspberry Pi 3. I have an adafruit 2.8 tft that was running fine on Retropie 3.8, I updated to 4.1 and now the games only play out through HDMI, can't get them to play on the tft screen. They were working fine previously on the tft on 3.8. I had to revert back to 3.8 to get it working again.

It is a strange one, i was running mine with no issue on the latest retropie image for pi zero. I was prompted to choose to update kernel when i was installing ppsspp. I chose yes....maybe i should of chose no. Mine still shows retropi/roms ect on the tft its just when i select a game the screen freezes and can only play game on tv through hdmi :/

@sjpearson I tried the update with both selecting update kernel and no and it still had the same problem. The problem seems to be now in 4.1 the default video mode is automatically selected to output one of the CEA profiles. Whereas before the default profile was left blank which I think pushed the video out of the tft by default. You can't deselect the profile now so its forcing it out the HDMI. This needs to be fixed so that all tft users can play their games.

I see, maybe there is a work around....some kind of script that can be added to ignore or force to stay on tft screen. Im new to linux, anything to do with programming snd computers infact :D

I just cant find a solution to this, tried as much as i know. Uninstall/install retropie a few times. Updated rasbian a couple of times. Installed tft drivers ect.... Messed with /boot/config.txt..../boot/cmdline.txt and other things the web has offered up. I dont know what else to do and since i dont have a pc to write images on an sd card and Im not buying any more preinstalled rasbian os's. They are not cheap and have purchashed too many to count. Im calling this project a bust and my adventure into raspberry pi officialy over :D

@sjpearson The easiest way to fix is to revert to Retropie 3.8. Then it will allow you to game on the tft screen. Unfortunately the 4.1 update changed how the games display.

I dont know how to downgrade my retropie. I dont have a pc so can only do it through terminal with internet connection, i dont think thats pissible :/
