USB not working - Pi Zero

Hi guys,
I've followed some tutorials on eBay on installing Retropie onto a Pi Zero I've had since it's launch; I've not done anything with it since getting it free with a magazine.
It seems that the USB port doesn't work correctly, however when the Amazon basics hub is plugged in, the LED light does illuminate but neither a USB keyboard or the iBuffalo controller I bought work/are recognised.
Is this something I have messed up or could it be that my Pi Zero is faulty?

Is the USB hub powered by an AC plug? Have you tried another USB hub? Have you switched which port is getting the power and which the hub is plugged into? (I think you could switch them...but it's been a while since I brought my Zero out) -

No I don't think so, all I have done is installed the OS via win32diskimager and then inserted the SD card into the Pi.I'm also using a decent output USB power adaptor too.

@SimonB Have you tried a device plugged directly into the Pi to prove its not just the hub at fault?

Hi Mark,
I have plugged both the gamepad and a USB keyboard direct via the micro usb adaptor.
I made the assumption that because the light came on the hub it was working?

I've also just tested the hub and kayboard on my works laptop and both function fine...

@SimonB It's not clear, did the devices work fine when plugged directly into the Pi zero or not? If they did, issue is the power draw through the hub and you'll need a powered one for the devices you're hooking up to it. If not, could be a faulty USB.

You won't believe that after reinstalling Retropie for the third time.....it's working fine now!
