Just to bump this thread, I'm in the same boat. Use .bin/.cue .ecm & ISO files with a number of bios files & I still get this damn problem. It's annoying me to the point of giving up...!! Please help if you can. Pi3 running 4.02 now, did same on 3.8.1 & 3.7

@The-Layer-Cake you'll have to give us specific examples. give us the full path (including extension) of your game files, same for your bios, and describe when it's going wrong.

Whats a specific example of the files for a given game you have?

For example, I use one .bin file and one .cue file for Crash Bandicoot. The cue simply points to the bin. Both are in the /roms/psx directory.
This runs without issue for me.

I have the bios named correctly and in the right place as per the Wiki here:

The emulator wont understand the .ecm files, but you can find plenty of online guides on how to convert those to relevant tracks.

@dankcushions Sorry I'm not sure how mean to state them;

One example is,

RETROPIE>roms>psx>Oddworld Abe's oddesye.iso with RETROPIE>roms>psx>Oddworld Abe's oddesye.cue.

This starts with the black screen & yellow writing underneath but then just stays black when the writing disappears.

Where as I also have,

RETROPIE>roms>psx>Namco Museum Vol1.iso with
RETROPIE>roms>psx>Namco Museum Vol1.srm.

This actually starts & runs fine.

Any ideas at all? I'm not skilled enough to work out how to elaborate more I'm afraid.

My original .bin & .cue files used to work on 3.6.

@The-Layer-Cake that's the games, and now the bios name and location in the same format?

@The-Layer-Cake I'm not sure that a PSX .iso file needs a .cue! Cue files are just small text files referencing 1 or more .bin files with the first .bin file being the game data and any additional .bin files are the audio tracks.

Also as @dankcushions pointed out, please give us the location and file names of your PSX BIOS files and remember, everything is case sensitive.

For example:
In my /home/pi/RetroPie/BIOS I have these BIOS files with this exact case:

SCPH1001.BIN
scph5500.bin
scph5501.bin
scph5502.bin

@backstander Yes my bios files are in the same folder, they are as follows;

Dtlh3000.bin
Dtlh3002.bin
SCPH101.BIN
SCPH1001.BIN
SCPH5000.BIN
SCPH5500.BIN
Scph5502.bin
Scph7000.bin
SCPH7001.BIN
Scph7003.bin
scph7502.bin

@The-Layer-Cake rather than have a million BIOS files, I would just stick to one in the correct format:

SCPH1001.BIN

delete the rest. this should mean you are emulating a USA psx system. make sure all your game files are also the USA (ntsc) versions and not EU/PAL etc.

also note what @Floob says about your cue/iso.
