Setup buttons in MAME games for PS3 controller

Hi guys,

at first! It is great to have such great possibility to play that old games! THX!!

But, I have one small problem.
If I start a MAME game, and try to change the button setting, I´m not able to change it in the config menu.
I use a PS3 controller and try to use the X as the firebutton.
If I try to set the P1 Button 1 "not J1 JoyButton 13 not J1| Joybutton 14 J1 JoyButton 5 J1 | Joybutton 13 J1 JoyButton 7"
The problem is under "Input ( general )" and "Input ( this game )
I do not understand, what it means!
Can someone help me?
