I'm new to using a PI, and have ZERO knowledge of it's inner workings. I installed Retropie on a microSD card, and have all roms on a USB drive. I can play games just fine, but cannot save at all whether it be the built-in save system for a game, or by using save-states.

When I try to create a save state through the hot-key command in any emulator(Select + R shoulder), I get a yellow error message on the bottom left telling me (Task failed: Saving state).

I cannot get a solid answer on what to do, and the only clue I have is that retropie doesn't have permission to write on my USB. I've heard a lot of conflicting information, and have also heard that SSH and Linux knowledge is necessary to fix this problem. I have ZERO knowledge of either of these...

What can I do to make save-states work, and allow retropie to save game data on my usb?

      Pi Model: 3 Model B
      RetroPie Version Used: 4.1
Built From: Pre made SD Image on RetroPie website.
USB Devices connected: Sandisk Cruzer 8gb USB
      Controller used: Wireless f710 Gamepad.
Error messages received: Task failed: Saving state

      (G:\retropie\configs\from_retropie\configs\all)
      Filename: retroarch.cfg

        Tried adding:
        (sudo chown -R pi:pi /media/usb/)

to the end of .cfg file. It did nothing.

@vicviper001 try typing this in the terminal.

          sudo chown -R pi:pi /media/usb0/

Not sure if you can on a hdd if it isnt a linux format. I had issues where i had to

          sudo chown -R pi:pi /home/pi/

You could try giving 777 permissions to the rom folders on your hard drive.

            @edmaul69
Giving 777 permission to each folder didn't work.

I'm not sure what terminal you are mentioning, but if it requires a USB keyboard connected to the Pi, then I'm afraid I'm at a standstill, because all I have to navigate my PI is a gamepad.

Is there anything I can access using my PC, that might fix this problem?

@vicviper001 if you are on a pc if you use winscp and you right click on a rom folder and choose properties then you choose 0777 options and click on the option for all files and folders or something. As far as the chown commands, if you install putty on your pc, you can use that to type in the chown commands.

Wow, I posted this question 3 years ago, and never responded to anybody's suggestions... my bad! The solution to my problem was embarrassingly stupid and simple. Retropie had copied all the roms over from my usb drive, and this filled up my micro sd card to a point where there just wasn't any room left to save game data. THAT is why I kept seeing "task failed: saving state".

Hopefully this is helpful to someone.
