What is the best version of mame to play rhythm heaven arcade on Retropie?

If it helps,I'm using a raspberry pi 3 model B. This is my first retropie related project so I don't know much. Anyone have any suggestions?

The great thing about retropie is that you don't have to stick to 1 app for arcade emulation. You can choose what emulator each game uses, just make sure you have the right rom set for each emulator. For most games, mame 2003 hits the sweet spot between compatibility and speed for most games. For neo geo, FB alpha is better at that. Games like street fighter 3. Require FB alpha.
