Hello - first time user of Raspberry & Retropie. I just setup the device today and was able to configure the controller & a keyboard going into EmulatorStation. Once I selected a game, the configuration would go away for both the Controller & Keyboard essentially freezing the system and requiring a restart. I have searched through all of the commentary as well as YouTube videos and cannot seem to find a solution. I have not been able to determine what, if any, options I should select differently in the Main Menu or other options. Populated list of data as requested below:

Please let me know if this is enough information -- as mentioned, super new to this...

      Pi Model: v 3
      RetroPie Version Used: v4.1
Built From: downloaded file from retropie site and followed instructions to extract with 7-zip and used Win32DiskImager
USB Devices connected: tried once with just the USB SNES style controller RetroLink and once with both Controller and Keyboard (logitech k400)
      Controller used: same as above
Error messages received: no error messages, it just loses controller mapping and essentially requires a reboot
Log found in /dev/shm/runcommand.log (if relevant):
Guide used: many different online guides tried / youtube videos / this forum /
      File:
Emulator: Tried with NES / SNES / Genesis
Attachment of config files: how do i copy these out of the device?

Thank you very much in advance!!

@TheCartesian Please can you detail further the bit where you say

Once I selected a game, the configuration would go away for both the Controller & Keyboard essentially freezing the system and requiring a restart.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean - You have got past the configuration succesfully - and then have chosen a game or you are stuck at the end of configuring a device ?

To help us help you - please make sure you read the sticky topics before posting - https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first

@BuZz - I am able to configure the controller through the White/Grey screen before entering RetroPie. But, from there, once I select a game to play, everything becomes unmapped and neither the keyboard nor controller work and I have no options but to restart the Pi. I have tried this with NES / SNES / Genesis and all experience the same issue.

          Thank you again!

I have exactly the same problem. I found quite a few videos on youtube which shows you how to resolve this by going into the actual retroarch configuration menu's.... but that's in version 3.6 of retropie. In v4.1 (the current latest version) many of those menu's do not appear. I've tried with a SNES styled USB controller... and a USB keyboard. When going through the retropie menu I can use both USB controller and/or keyboard. As soon as i select a game in any of the emulators, then the USB devices no longer work/or are recognised. I cannot even get back to the menu at all. Hard shutdown is the only way to get out of this (unplug the power cable) from my pi. I am also running the same setup as @TheCartesian mentions above running on a pi3 B. HELP retropie guru's..... i stupidly told my kids i'd get this setup for them to play the BEST CLASSIC games ever and i'm failing. Snif snif....
