Raspberry Pi 3 + latest Raspbian + Retropie manual install

Hi all,

in my raspberry pi 3 ver B i have installed latest Raspbian, after that i have installed manually retropie :
sudo apt-get install git lsb-release
cd git clone --depth=1 https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup.git
cd RetroPie-Setup
chmod +x retropie_setup.sh
sudo ./retropie_setup.sh
with retropie setup i have installed basic and optional packages without errors, now i have a strage thing, i think i miss something, if i lauch lxterminal and write emulationstation than enter i got this error :
lvl0: Error Creating SDL windows!
Could not get EGL display
lvl0: Render failed to initialize!
lvl0: Windows failed to initialize!

but if i open putty from my pc, log into raspberry pi3 and lauch emulationstation works perfectly.

What did I do wrong?

@Marcone698 You need to update to 4.1.9, the latest version. This is done via RetroPie setup in the GUI or via the CLI.

@columboscoat That's not the issue (however they will need to update to launch the desktop from ES)

@Marcone698 you can not launch retropie from the desktop - it has to be run from a terminal - you need to exit from the desktop, or use retropie-setup and configure autostart to boot to terminal/emulationstation.

@Marcone698 is there a reason you are installing manually ? It requires a little bit more linux knowledge and you may be better of with the premade image.

@herb_fargus Is there anyway you could change the image on the Download page? It seems that the change in xorg server permissions is catching a lot of first time installers out. Most people I know run other stuff rather than just RetroPie. It seems like the issue keeps cropping up. I know it was something else this time but... Or perhaps encourage people to update straight away following first boot.

@columboscoat I update the images every couple of months or so when I decide we are at a good point to do a snapshot of the work / bump the version to the next 4.x etc. It requires preparation and testing of the new images, plus writing up of news etc. There will be a new image in the near future, but I cannot just quickly update the images really.

It can be documented on the wiki though until then.

@BuZz Thanks. I appreciate that it's not as simple as just changing the DL file. An addition to the wiki would definitely help. Maybe on the DL site too, just saying something like "Image release date xx.xx.xx To ensure you have the most up to date version please update after 1st boot".

@BuZz I have a premade retropie in my raspberry pi zero, I use this one to play with 8/16 bit consoles and c64 emulators, with my raspberry pi 3 B i try to learn what are the things I can do, try which mame roms works and which not (without mess my primary retropie in raspberry pi zero), try to instal 3.5 lcd.....
